4-Day Summer Itinerary: Zion National Park

Zion National Park sits in the canyon country of southwestern Utah, where the Virgin River has carved impossibly dramatic slot canyons and sandstone cliffs that glow orange in the afternoon light. We visited over the July 4th weekend for a 3-night, 4-day trip — here's everything we did and learned.

Day 1: LA to Springdale — Arrival & Sunset

The eight-hour drive from Los Angeles included the expected Vegas-area traffic, so plan extra time. We arrived in Springdale around 6:30 PM, checked into the Novel House Inn, and immediately walked to Canyon Junction Bridge for the golden hour. The viewpoint frames Angel's Landing and the canyon walls in a single composition — it's a photography spot not to miss on your first evening.

Day 2: The Narrows

The Narrows is Zion's most iconic hike — a route through the Virgin River itself, where canyon walls rise 1,000 feet above the stream. We started with the 1.2-mile Riverside Walk, an easy paved path, before wading into the river. Water levels reached thigh-height at certain points, making waterproof hiking sandals and trekking poles essential.

Tip

Hiking poles are a must in the Narrows. Rent them from Zion Adventure Company in Springdale if you haven't brought your own.

Day 3: Kolob Canyons, Emerald Pools & Canyon Overlook

We packed Day 3 with three different hikes. Timber Creek Overlook in Kolob Canyons offers sweeping red-rock views on an easy 1.4-mile round trip. Lower Emerald Pool surprised us with cascading waterfalls and a hidden grotto. We finished at Canyon Overlook Trail at sunset — a 2-mile out-and-back with narrow ledges and dramatic drop-offs that rewards patient photographers.

Day 4: Return to LA

Our fourth day was primarily a drive day back to Los Angeles with a lunch stop in Las Vegas. We were home by 5 PM — leaving us a full Sunday to recover before the week.

Essential Tips

  • Buy an Annual National Parks Pass to skip the entrance fee lines
  • Shuttle waits average 20–45 minutes in peak summer — start your day early
  • Pack 4–5 liters of water, energy bars, and salty snacks
  • Canyon Overlook Trail is an excellent alternative to Angels Landing with similar views but no permit required
  • Springdale has good dining options — we loved Zion Pizza and Noodle Co. and Thai Sapa
